Here, I would like to discuss about our poverty in our interest of reading books. Nowadays, we know that our enthusiasm in reading books is lower than watching tv, going to the cinema, going shopping, and others useless activities. Now, I’ll give you some facts about our “poverty”
Our human resources is on 112nd under others ASEAN’s states; because our interest of reading books is also under that states. Taken from BPS [Badan Pusat Statistik] 2006, showed that most of us like watching television [85,9% of all Indonesian resident ] and like listening to the radio [40,3%] better than reading newspaper [23,5%]. In decade [1993 - 2003] the increasing of newspaper readers only up to 0,2% while the television watchers up to 211,1%. From other information, it indicated that our children’s competence in reading is only 51,7, Philippine 52,6 , Thailand 65,1 and Singapore 74,0.
Our books availability is extremely rude. China with their 1,3 billions residents able to publish 140000 new books every one year. Japan with 120 millions residents published 65000 new books in a year. Vietnam 80 millions people, able to publish 15000 new books. Malaysia 26 millions people, published 10000 new books, and Indonesia with 220 millions people only published 5000 new books. Can you imagine that? How poor we are? What a pity we are?
So, starting from now, from yourself, ourselves, for yourself, for ourselves, and for our country
Let’s change!! Well, for all of you, if you have read this, you also have made a change..
see yak!!
